Volunteering has always been an interest of mine, having previously worked in a position that strongly relies on the support of the community. Shortly after moving to Miami in the summer of 2014, I searched for volunteer opportunities specifically in the LGBTQ community, not only to meet new people, but also to fill my time doing something of importance. The very first opportunity I came across was an upcoming day of volunteering with Out Miami at Pridelines.
Signing up at the OUT Miami welcome desk
At the time, being so new to Miami, I was unfamiliar with both OUT Miami and Pridelines, but I immediately jumped on the opportunity. The OUT Miami Volunteer Coordinator contacted me a few days prior to the event making sure I had all the information I needed as a volunteer. They informed me that we would be supporting the Pridelines team as they prepared for the official opening of the new community center.
With fellow volunteers and Pridelines staff
From the moment we arrived at the location everyone was warm and welcoming. We were taken on a tour of the newly renovated space and briefly taught about the agency’s role in the community. The remainder of the day was spent painting, pulling weeds, laying mulch, and hanging lights, all while enjoying conversations with the other volunteers. As we were wrapping up, an overwhelming feeling came over me, and I knew I wanted to be a part of this community.
Hanging up the decorative lights to make their backyard area ready for events
A few months later as I was on the market for a change in my career, I thought about Pridelines, remembering my OUT Miami volunteer experience. I checked the Pridelines website and to my surprise, there was an opening for the exact job that I had been searching for, and without hesitation I immediately applied for the Executive Assistant position. I was contacted shortly after submitting my resume, and after a few interviews followed by days of consideration, I was offered the position. Excitement doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt on my first day. I purposely mentioned my time volunteering with OUT Miami, so I’m almost certain that it helped me get the job, lol! I’ve now been a member of the Pridelines team for 9 months, and I often walk around the center, knowing that this was something that I helped build alongside other dedicated volunteers, and for that I am so appreciative of the OUT Miami organization. Because through them I was introduced to a community that I’ve grown to love and accept as my own. It all started with OUT Miami!
Celebrating with Team OUT Miami a job COMPLETE!
